People, Culture and Environment of Southern Africa
EVSC 493 (3 Credit Hours) and ANTH 493 (3 Credit Hours)Course Description

This annual summer course offered by CRES faculty (Bob Swap, Environmental Sciences and Hanan Sabea, Anthropology) offers UVa students a unique first-hand view of critical environmental, social and political issues facing southern Africa, as well as an opportunity to meet and interact with leading scientists and political figures in the region.
Focusing on the intersection between peoples, cultures and environments of South Africa, this summer study abroad course details the contrast between the low- and highveld in South Africa and their rural and urban setting. It emphasizes the link between culture, history, power and the environment in shaping the lived experiences and the landscapes of the Gauteng and Limpopo Provinces.
Students will spend time in each of the following locations: Johannesburg; Gauteng Province, South Africa; Thohoyondou, Limpopo Province; Maputo/Massengir/XaiXai, Mozambique; and Acornhoek, Limpopo Province, South Africa
In each locale, the SAVANA partner universities (WITS, University of Venda, and WITS Rural Facility) collaborate with the U.Va. group in the delivery of lectures, both on their respective campuses as well as during field visits, in addition to active participation by faculty and students.
