Research:
After completing her training in internal medicine and pulmonary disease, Dr. Brashers practiced in a rural general medical clinic and in the University of Virginia emergency department. She has been teaching pathophysiology, immunology, cardiopulmonary disease, physical diagnosis, pulmonary assessment, and chest x-ray interpretation to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate medical and nursing students and residents since 1988. She has written her own textbook in pathophysiology which is currently in its second edition and is published in several languages. She has received the Excellence in Teaching Awards from both the University of Virginia nursing and medical schools, the Harrison Fund Teaching Award for exceptional teaching and leadership, the UVA All University Outstanding Teacher Award, and is a founding member of the UVA School of Medicine Academy of Distinguished Educators. She conducts research in the area of interdisciplinary health care education, and provides workshops and seminars on nurse/physician collaborative practice throughout the state, region and the nation. She is Vice President of Interdisciplinary Practice and a Distinguished Practitioner of Medicine in the National Academies of Practice, the nation’s premier interdisciplinary health organization focused on collaboration in health care practice, education and research. Dr. Brashers is the School of Nursing project coordinator for the Southern Africa and Virginia Networks and Associations (SAVANA) consortium and serves as a faculty sponsor for graduate and undergraduate nursing students pursuing health care research in South Africa.
