Sue Ringrose

Working in: Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research Centre

Position:
Assoc. Professor of Geomorphology and Biogeography

Regions of Interest:
Botswana (Okavango system), Southern African region, Global semi-arid lands

Research:
Developing baseline data on Okavango ecosystems and the Okavango basin leading to a series of projects on transboundary water issues throughout the southern African region. Issues include implications of climate change scenarios, on ecological systems, impacts of human use and eutrification effects. Sue Ringrose is also a geomorphologist with an interest in duricrust formation particularly as this relates to palaeo-environmental determinations. The palaeo-environmental work has led to recent publications covering the proto-rift in Botswana and wetland evolution in the MOZ (Makgadikgadi –Okavango-Zambezi) basin. This is an offshoot of her original research interests in landscape evolution which has led to the publication of a number of papers on remote sensing techniques and applications in developing countries. A particular focus has involved the mapping desertification/land degradation phenomena. In terms of wetlands a main contribution lies in the area of vegetation cover mapping and the development of projects entailing vegetation change (LULC) over time. Other work has concentrated on characterizing the riparian zones particularly in the distal part of the Okavango and considerations of drying gradients. This has been in response to modeled outputs showing that the Okavango wetlands may incur major drying over longer timescales.

Sue Ringrose has worked in Botswana mainly at the main campus of the University of Botswana since 1983 with an intervening two years since then at Northern Territory University in Australia. Prior to that she worked in Canada on mainly geologically oriented topics. She was posted to the Harry Oppenheimer Okavango Research Centre in 2000 where she works as a senior scientist in charge of a number of projects and heavily involved in writing proposals for Centre financing and attracting collaborators to work with Centre staff on a diversity of topics. Sue Ringrose has provided editorial services for a number of journals and is on the Editorial Board of Geocarto International. She has authored or co-authored 70 publications in peer viewed scientific journals.
