Recent Project(s): The Southern Africa Validation of EOS (SAVE) team was formed to validate land and atmospheric operational products from the Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra satellite using in-situ data collected in southern Africa.
SAVE builds on existing science and monitoring networks, providing new data targeted for both EOS and non-EOS sensor products. The SAVE team collaborates with regional investigators, EOS instrument (MODIS) and Interdisciplinary Science (IDS) teams, and contributes to the generation of accurate regional products. These data are available to parameterize and validate EOS (IDS) models, help address regional global change questions, and contribute to a regional environmental assessment for southern Africa (e.g., SAFARI 2000) as suggested by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). SAVE data are openly distributed via the SAFARI 2000 CDROM series and EOS Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs).
SAVE helps provide a foundation for a regionally supported long-term in-situ measurement program in southern Africa. This foundation, including the tools and lessons learned, will foster the transition from the EOS missions to the NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP; launch date: 2006).
