Regions of Interest:
Rio Grande River Basin (New Mexico), Kruger National Park, South Africa; Mongu,

Research:
Thermal infrared remote sensing. Optimal land surface temperature estimation. Assimilation of remote sensing products into land surface models. Water and energy land surface processes. Science applications (water resources, agriculture).

Recent Project(s): • Directional effects in land surface temperature satellite retrievals: assess the impact of vegetation structure and observation geometry in retrievals of land surface temperature with wide field of view sensors (e.g., AVHRR, MODIS). • Improving evapotranspiration estimates to aid water management practices in the Rio Grande River Basin: simulate land surface processes at high spatial resolutions (1 km) within the Land Information System (LIS); assimilate satellite derived products (e.g., land surface temperature) into land surface models to improve estimates of root-zone soil moisture conditions and evapotranspiration; eddy-covariance measurement towers over agricultural and riparian areas. • Near-real time retrievals of MODIS land surface temperature: modify and implement MODIS land surface temperature algorithm within the MODIS Rapid Response System, to allow for near-real time monitoring of energy/water surface conditions at global scales. • SAFARI 2000 – ground measurements of temperature and soil moisture: assess the relationship between soil moisture availability, vegetation water stress condition, and surface temperature in African savannas; scale land surface temperature measurements.
